The unnamed jailbird was apparently filmed by guards at the penal colony in the town of Atbasar, Akmola Region, as he was being challenged over his refusal to clean the loos.
As he stands in a room surrounded by guards, the prisoner looks almost tearful as he is questioned, as if he knows what is coming.
When the guards demanded to know why he will not clean the toilets, the inmate reportedly told them it was not his job.
Then five uniformed officers suddenly close in and grab the inmate pinning him to the ground by his legs, arms and head.
A sixth officer then raises a brutal-looking baton above his head and brings it down with all his strength on the prisoner’s buttocks.
As it lands, the jailbird lets out an ear-splitting scream of agony before the baton rises again and comes crashing down on his backside.
The prisoner is repeatedly hit before the officers break off and allow him to get back to his feet again.
The eye-watering footage was picked up by local media after being posted on social media, triggering an investigation by the Kazakh authorities.
The Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs said prison staff had overstepped their roles.
The Ministry is quoted in local media as saying: “At the moment, an official investigation is being conducted into this fact, based on the results of which an appropriate decision will be made.”
