Doctors decided to let nature take its course after a baby boy was rushed to the hospital after biting into a mercury thermometer and swallowing the silvery liquid.
Panicked parents brought the child to the Novy Urengoy Central City Hospital, in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia, on Tuesday, 14th May.
There, they told the medical staff that they had left their baby boy unattended for a while, and upon returning, they discovered that he had bitten into a thermometer and swallowed the mercury.
Doctors however said that ingesting mercury isn’t harmful, as only its vapors are toxic, and took X-ray scans of the young patient’s stomach to ensure there were no complications.
They then did further X-rays to monitor the mercury’s passage through his digestive system.
The hospital said in a statement obtained by Newsflash: “The child was examined and kept under outpatient observation for a few days.
“The mercury droplets that entered the stomach passed through the digestive tract and were excreted with the stool.
“Once the doctors confirmed that the boy’s health was not at risk and the mercury had left his body, the observation was lifted.”
It continued: “Such incidents are recorded by the police, and in some cases, they are equated with negligent parental supervision.
“We urge you not to leave young children unattended and to keep dangerous items, medicines, and chemicals out of their reach.
“If an accident does occur, you should immediately seek medical attention and contact the demercurisation service.
“We advocate for a safe childhood!”
